Do Your Employees Speak Fluent English?
The “fake it until you make it” philosophy has proven to be false on so many levels and I can attest to this by narrating one experience. Previously, two individuals in their 50s had signed up for business, academic, and conversational English classes at Learn English with Bathabile. One of them was male, the other female. Both are friends and coworkers; we'll refer to the female as Ntsiki and the male as Thokozani.
Ntsiki and Thokozani submitted applications for the same director position with a certain municipality institution in Pretoria. Naturally, they both had a great deal of experience and were equally qualified, yet despite their knowledge and 20+ years of industry experience, they were both rejected. When Thokozani enquired as to why he and Ntsiki were turned down, he came to understand it was due to their inability to communicate in English fluently. Instead, the position was offered to an external applicant who was proficient in English. For a person to think that they can attain the results they desire by emulating confidence, competence, and an optimistic outlook in life is erroneous. Obviously, Ntsiki and Thokozani's story isn't unusual in and of itself, as there have been thousands of identical incidents. Considering this, why then do some employees believe they can get away with not having a good command of English?
Being able to communicate effectively in English is a reality that cannot be avoided. In South Africa for instance, English is a prominent language widely used in the workplace, at school and universities, in social settings, at home, in the community, in government, business, and the media. English is a universal language and it is used everywhere. Being fluent in the language can open the door to a plethora of professional prospects, such as teaching English overseas or empowering people to communicate effectively, to mention a few. Because of this, English is more than just a language; it also promotes an amalgamated culture and way of life.
In today's world, communication is essential, and English offers the means for many cultures to do so through plays, movies, books, the internet, and other media. This is why, in contemporary society, many organizations require their staff members to be fluent in English in order to connect with the company's local and international clientele. Employees who have an excellent command of the language are at an advantage in these circumstances. Moreover, most if not all baseline teachings are in English so one needs an understanding of English to navigate such parameters.
Given these factors, it proves essential for employees to learn English today, and at Learn English with Bathabile (LEWB) we understand this. In essence, our English tutorials go beyond language instruction; at LEWB, English is a way of life! This is not to suggest that we disregard or overlook the importance of learning African languages, but rather that we acknowledge the critical necessity for adults to communicate effectively and efficiently in English. Sadly, even though South Africa is a native English-speaking country, the vast majority of the population is not fluent in the language, especially given that over 50% of native South Africans live in poverty.
Essentially, we at LEWB guarantee high-quality education. Our curriculum is tailored to the client's particular needs and we give special attention to our client's requests, ensuring that progress is made in all spheres of life.
