Empowering Learners: Reading Comprehension Strategies

A young African American woman covers her face with a red book.

Reading’s ultimate purpose is comprehension, or deriving meaning from what you have read. Readers who are accustomed to reading take this for granted and may not recognise the importance of reading comprehension.

In truth, comprehension is a collaborative and intentional effort. Readers should evaluate, internalise, and personalise the content they are reading. Below are some reading comprehension strategies.

1. Connect
To relate to the text, draw on your understanding of the world, other stories, and yourself.

2. Envision
To paint a mental picture, use the story's spoken language and allusions.

3. Predict
Look into the hints the author offers. Predict possible outcomes based on what vou already know through knowledge or personal experience.

4. Analyse
While reading, engage in the following:
  • Critical thinking.
  • Ask questions about the text.
  • Examine the author.

5. Clarify
Reread the passage slowly, study the images, and use a dictionary.

6. Conclude
Create a hypothesis about what you don't know based on what you know.
