Let’s Grammar You Up!

A picture of a white telephone.

Once a South African adult learner in her fifties asked me what grammar was, and I explained it to her in this way. "How do we determine if someone is alive?" I asked. She said, "If they have a pulse." "Correct," I said. So, if a person's heart is beating, they must be alive, right?" She gave a nod. "In the same way," I said, "grammar is the heart of English; it is the structure of the English language." She smiled as she experienced an 'aha' moment.

Yes! It’s true that grammar is extremely important when learning or improving your English, but vocabulary and pronunciation are equally important. Yet, very few people realise this. It won’t help to focus on grammar alone when you’re vocabulary-bankrupt with bad pronunciation. In a situation like this, your primary focus should be on expanding your vocabulary while also improving your pronunciation through phonics and speaking activities. Grammar should thus be secondary.
