Teacher Training: Seven Effective Methods

A group of teachers is taking part in a training workshop.

In South Africa, around 70% of schools are no-fee schools. Tragically, many of these teachers are not being trained or equipped with new knowledge and methodologies regularly. Over time, this leads to demotivated teachers, redundant instructional approaches, low-quality education, and ultimately a low pass rate.

Teacher training should be a mandatory practise in any operational school. Institutions
can provide training once or twice a month, with educators enrolled in learning programmes designed to equip them with the knowledge, methodologies, and skills needed to perform their tasks effectively in the classroom. Below are seven effective teacher-training methods.

1. Observations:
Attending a different teacher's class to observe, gain insight, and reflect is known as teacher observation.

2. Instructor-led training:
This sort of instruction is delivered in a classroom setting by an instructor.

3. Webinars:
Webinars are online presentations that are either live or recorded. Teachers can watch these at their convenience.

4. Teaching workshops
A face-to-face gathering where a group of teachers engages in in-depth discussions, gains knowledge, discusses ideas, and participates in practical exercises on a certain subject.

5. E-learning:
This is an appealing option for teacher training because it is flexible and accessible at any time.

6. Role-playing:
Role-play training is an active learning approach where teachers act out realistic events under the supervision of a trainer or facilitator.

7. On-the-job training:
This kind of training takes place in the workplace and enables teachers to gain knowledge while doing their jobs.
