Candy: “LEWB Is Molding Me!”
“I am a university law student enrolled at Unisa. I signed up at Learn English with Bathabile (LEWB) for academic English two months ago and I must say, it has been a great experience so far.
I mainly struggle with grammar, reading, and writing. At LEWB, my teacher has been assisting me in these areas, and I am gradually improving. Each week, we focus on different aspects of academic English, which has not only boosted my confidence but has also made me more eager to engage with the material.
The grammar exercises have been particularly helpful. They allow me to review fundamental rules and apply them in various contexts. With feedback from my teacher, I can see where I tend to make mistakes and learn how to correct them. This practise is essential, especially as I prepare for writing legal papers and briefs in the future.
Reading has also become less daunting. Initially, I struggled with understanding complex legal texts, often getting lost in the terminology. However, my teacher has introduced strategies for critical reading, which include summarising key points. By breaking down the material into manageable components, I find myself better equipped to comprehend and analyse cases and statutes.
Writing, on the other hand, remains a work in progress. The writing tasks at LEWB have pushed me to produce various types of writing. I have learned the importance of structuring my arguments clearly and providing coherent supporting evidence.
Beyond the academic support, LEWB has fostered a sense of community among us students. Sharing our struggles and successes creates an encouraging environment that motivates everyone to push through their challenges. I often find myself discussing legal concepts with my peers, which has not only enriched my understanding of the subjects but has also made the learning experience more enjoyable.
As I continue my journey through law school, I am grateful for the skills I am gaining at LEWB. I look forward to applying these skills both in my coursework at Unisa and in my future legal career. With consistent practise and the support from my teacher and peers, I am confident that I will overcome my initial hurdles and emerge as a more proficient law student.”
